The Party Goes On

Not sure if it’s just the 🏘️ homes of most of my family and friends or if it’s most homes but, the majority of the homes my family and friends live in all have steps to enter.

🤷‍♀️ I’m not sure what is worse, being invited to a family or friends home for a party or celebration knowing I won’t be able to attend because the entrance to their home is a flight of stairs (not #wheelchair #accessible) or not being invited for the same reason.

For me and my honey, invites to a house party has become permanent house arrest.

FROM THIS TO THIS

Unfortunately, the phrase “out of sight, out of mind” is actually true. The more we, or anyone, declines offers to attend functions with friends and family the more the invitations become less and less, the more friendships/relationships fade, the more isolated we become.

It’s sad too, when some people still don’t seem to understand. We’ll hear responses like”Okay, let us know if you change your mind.” Excuse me, do they really not understand that we are not declining to attend because we don’t want to attend but instead because we either can not or it’s too difficult to attend. My honey is 63 years old, he can’t be pulling me, in a wheelchair 👩‍🦼 , up a flight of stairs, oh, did they forget they have stairs or the facility has stairs 🤦‍♀️

  1. So very true. Houses are not built with “what if” in mind. I think your comments in this blog will help educate many. Most of us don’t think of these things until it is brought to our attention. A single step can be a problem, a nightmare, for a person in a wheelchair.
