What’s next has been weighing heavy on our minds the last few weeks. My honey has been successfully working from home, as a lot of people have, since mid March. Then his company informed everyone that after Labor Day they wanted to bring people back to work two days a week and continue remote three days.
My honey works in NYC, which is still struggling in certain areas/hot spots of #COVID. With me being #paralyzed and restricted to this #wheelchair 🦼, with virtually no #mobility, I myself am at higher risk of COVID. In addition, my parents are both 80+ and at extreme high risk for COVID leaving my honey as the ONLY person in our family responsible for transportation to/from doctor appoints, picking up medications and grocery runs. As a result of these risk factors coupled with his age 63.5 and having a BMI of over 30 (technically obese according to the CDC guidelines), my honey would like to continue to work remotely but his company is really making it difficult.
First the company requested a letter from his doctor stating the reason he should be allowed to continue to work remotely. Our doctor provided a letter indicating that due to his age and the fact that he is the primary person in our family helping me and my elderly parents the doctor requested they consider allowing him to continue to work remote.
The company denied the request saying the letter didn’t focus on his personal health and if he himself was at high risk and that they are following the CDC guidelines which state the age of 65 to be at high risk. Are you kidding me, for a matter of 17 months!
After reaching out to our doctor again, my honey went for a complete physical. The “visit summary” clearly stated his BMI was over 30 and the doctor said that should be enough for the company to approve his request. My honey submitted the visit summary (granted it was not an actual letter from the doctor) along with the EXACT wording from the CDC website which states “Having obesity, defined as a body mass index (BMI) between 30 kg/m2 and <40 kg/m2 or severe obesity (BMI of 40 kg/m2 or above), increases your risk of severe illness from COVID-19″ and yet his company denied his request because “it was not an actual letter/note from the doctor and they are not health professionals and therefore can not determine his diagnosis from the visit summary!” Are they kidding!
Personally, I think they have not thought this through. They have already forced him to use all his remaining personal time off leaving him none for the remainder of the year. So what happens next? What happens if the doctor can not write another letter for a few days? The stress of this is just overwhelming! What’s going to happen, will the company lay him off because he feels going into New York City may jeopardize his health and/or mine and my parents? What do we do financially? We now have additional monthly expenses 💰 for personal items for me since surgery gone wrong left me paralyzed. 😲 Cases of COVID are continuing to slowing increase again.
In an interview today, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert, spoke with “CBS Evening News” anchor and managing editor Norah O’Donnell and Dr. Fauci “warned that coronavirus cases are on the rise in a majority of states, with only three seeing fewer cases. “It’s going in the wrong direction right now,” Fauci said. “So if there’s anything we should be doing, we should be doubling down in implementing the public health measures that we’ve been talking about for so long. Which are: Keeping a distance, no crowds, wearing masks, washing hands, doing things outside as opposed to inside.”
COVID is still a very real fact and health threat. How are you handling COVID? Are you finding this new normal, which is anything but normal, stressful?
As always, I wish you days filled with WONDER – take a minute to WONDER what it is that made you smile today! 😊
